This is the story of a team of 10 IIT Roorkee students who have created a buzz not only over India but also on international level. An amazing video done by them has already bagged 3 million views on YouTube within just 100 hours of its release and is still counting. This is a dance video on Ed Sheeran’s song Shape of You and is better than the original one. There’s not just their perfectly synchronized dance moves to be seen but a lot more including the story they’re portraying.
Four young handsome boys, all from different professions approach a girl on Valentine’s day hoping for a relief to their loneliness. But it takes a comical turn as you’ll see in the video. Other than dance and story, get a glimpse of beautiful campus of IIT Roorkee.
Let’s know from the team, how they made it happen.
1.Tell us about your team & How did you land upon the idea to do this video?
Our team comprises of 2 sections – Cinematic Section and Choreography Section.
From choreography, we have 6 people in the cast
i) Sambhav Jain
ii) Meet Saparia
iii) Satyabrata Panda
iv) Devarsh Tiwari
We are playing the role of fictional characters with different professions.
v) Priya Ajaniya and
vi) Apurva Jataan
From the cinematic section we’ve
i) Ankush Raut
ii) Ramanjeet Singh
The editors are
i) Yash Trivedi
ii) Rohit Verma
The credit for landing on the idea for this video rests with the Cinematic section. They approached us with this project and we liked it a lot.
2. How did you come up in choosing the song “Shape of You”?
We needed a song well suited for the occasion of Valentine’s Day. We were deciding on the song around 10th January. This song had just released then and was already trending. It had those delightful and catchy beats from the perspective of choreography. From all the points, be it Cinematic, Choreography or Valentine’s, the song was just perfect.
3. How much time went into the process of planning and execution?
Including everything, it took us one month to complete the video. We’d completed shooting by 11th feb. But the editing went on till an hour before release.
4. How was the support from college administration?
The college administration was overwhelmingly supportive. The Chief advisor Prof. P.K.Jha of Cultural Society was very happy with the idea of two sections collaborating for one project. This is something he’d always wanted. So throughout the project he remained very encouraging.
5. Did you expect this video would go viral?
Not at all. The reaction was totally unexpected. We’d expected around 40k views at most. Cinematic Section is very active in uploading short movies, music videos etc. We based our expectations on the reaction previous videos had received. We went to party on Valentine’s Day when the video had reached 10k views. We can’t even say that it’s a dream come true because we never even dreamt it.
6. You have already crossed 3 million views on you tube, how is the feeling?
It’s a great feeling. I’m still amazed at the development. The whole team is very happy. We’re feeling extremely overwhelmed receiving so much support from all over the country.
7. How is the response from family, friends and faculties?
All of us have been receiving some or the other text from our teachers. When we enter the class, the teacher acknowledges our efforts and stops to congratulate us in the middle of the class. Family is also very happy. Siblings actually are feeling so proud of us and friends know no bounds of happiness. This is not just our success, it’s the success of all of those around us and that is what makes it special.
8. Share with us some memorable incidents while making the video?
While we were doing the scene in front of the main building, our speakers got robbed. We always carried our Bluetooth speakers with us, which belonged to a friend of mine. After practice, we left the location. Soon we realized that the speakers were not with us and in just 2 minutes time when we came back, our speakers were gone. We were already low on budget and this incident on the top of that was too much a burden.
9. Are you also going to release “Making” video after some time?
We’d a short discussion on it but right now we don’t plan to release the making video.
10. What are the future plans? Can we expect some more brilliant videos from you guys?
Our team is definitely going to stay and work together. There will surely be more videos from us but viewers may expect a change in the cast. And not just the cast, but the direction, cinematography and the editing might also be handed over to the juniors. We worked in the guidance of our seniors and now we would like to guide our juniors likewise. So this time, juniors will be given a chance to feature in the video.
