2.What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments in your artistic career?
This Profession in itself needs a lot of efforts and patience. From reading your audience’s mind to experimenting, Everything is like a challenge here.
3.What are currently your main challenges as a DJ?
Being a female is a challenge for me I guess. Here a lot of people generalize you because of gender discrimination. They consider Female DJs stupid and think that female DJs get fame easily just because they are beautiful. But this is not the case. Apart from this, another challenge is to always keep yourself updated with what is going on in the market.
4.What is it about DJ’n, compared to, say, producing your own music, that makes it interesting for you?
Nothing excites me except from watching my audience enjoy! The satisfaction I get when I have a successful gig, is incomparable.
5.What do you usually do before preparing for a set?
Updating myself. I prefer listening to new music and listening to what’s new in the market. Also I follow a few DJs and keep updating myself with their new remixes.
6.How important is building a real relationship with the music you’re playing for your own approach? There’s so much music out there, is it even possible to build meaningful long-term relationships with a particular track or album?
It is indeed possible. When one is in love with a particular Track or album, it is always because they relate to it in some or the other way. Be it because it reminds them of someone or some memories. Or because it is the best song of the artist you love. So yes, though I do not play HipHop anymore, I still have a lot of HipHop music on my playlist from the early 2000s.
7.How difficult it was for you to enter this field as a women to opt this as a Career in India?
Oh My God! It has been the toughest for me. I belong to a Marwadi Conservative Family. They had no idea about what a DJ is. When I requested my mother to join the classes, she was supportive. My father supported me cause it was an Art. Later, when I wanted to take it as a profession, I had to face denial initially. Later, when they came along, saw me perform and realized this is a clean and respectful job, they were convinced.
8.Please recommend two DJs to our readers which you feel deserve their attention. Also Some words for the upcoming youth who wants to pursue this very entertaining Field.
One thing I would love to tell people considering to be a DJ is DO NOT OPT FOR IT FOR FAME. “Be a DJ because you love music. Because you love to Perform. Because it is your passion.”
When you give everything to Music, Fame follows. But when you give your everything to fame, Music is lost somewhere. And that point of time, you feel broken and lifeless. Do not lose the innocence in you that you have for music. Don’t get carried away by the fame and love the audience gives you. Always thank Music that has got you to this level.
The 2 DJs you should hear now is The Spindoctor for HipHop and SoundAvtar for Drum&Bass.
