Nowadays, almost no one could imagine their life without the use of mobile phones. To make it easier for the users, there are various companies offering beneficial talk-time, the internet and other plans. On 5th September 2016, a new company entered the telecommunication market, creating a buzz in the entire nation. JIO, a LET mobile network operator in India, owned by Reliance, come with various free offers for its users, such as free talk- time, unlimited texts, free 4G internet services and much more as “JIO Welcome offer”. It also started selling its SIM cards for free in order to attract more and more customers to the start- up. Even after becoming popular to such a great extent, JIO is still working its best to provide as more benefits as possible.
From the initial days, after the SIM was commercially launched, JIO has been a part of a lot of telecommunication controversies. Later the ‘welcome offer’ of unlimited talk- time and 4G data with FUP limit of 4GB per day, was previously valid until 6th December 2016, extended to 31st December 2016.
Apart from all these, here comes a new controversy about the company for introducing its “Happy New Year offer” for JIO users. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani, the owner of Reliance JIO, is now justifying his New Year offer to TRAI after being questioned about the new plan how it should not be seen as the violation of rules, why it should be treated as predatory and how it is different from its inaugural plan.
Sources, close to the company, claim that its ‘New Year’ offer is different to that of its ‘welcome offer’ and cannot be described as an extension. ‘New Year’ plan is almost similar to that of the ‘welcome plan’ but the only difference lies in the data plan which is reduced to 1GB per day, instead of 4GB per day. Also, unlike the ‘welcome plan’, New Year plan provides the facility of recharge after the data is exhausted. The company claims that the new offer will be valid for its new users starting from December 4th, 2016 to enjoy free data and unlimited calls till March 2017.

Even after being a great success with over millions of users, JIO is trying its best to claim that the new offer, providing its users free voice and data services for extended period of three more months, does not violate any of the norms of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the regulator of telecommunication of the country.
