Women have a lot of things to choose from. From ‘little black dress’ to long skirts, heels and what not! For men, the formula is quite simple. Suits. A high-end well-tailored suit.
Psychology
First impression: If it is probably going to land you in an opportunity, why lose it? Classic, clean, fitted clothing helps a quicker, more familiar, ‘cool’ guy judgement.
Goodness emulated: Actions emulate emotions. Emotions emulate actions. Social behavior of people around us affects us too. Needless to say, a decent clothing style makes you more attractive and likeable in a group, at least as an first impression. For more details see Ted talk by Amy Cuddy.
Cracking the code
The classic colors: charcoal gray and black. Celebrities help keep hottest trends in suits under radar. (Big thanks!) Just imitate. Simple as that. Varying from grey to navy blue with tan. Everything is permissible, on special occasions. Contrast between suit, shirt and tie is important. Shirt should be lighter and tie, darker.
Double vents at the back are modern, fashionable and comfortable. This type is more flattering for larger figures, and the added benefit is effortless casual putting hands in pocket.
The top button of a two-button (or the middle button of a three-button) should fall at or above the navel. Classic rule.
A small dimple in tie, just below the knot, gives a disheveled yet polished look.
At a professional meeting, make sure there’s a small lapel. Besides being aesthetically pleasing, it helps keep tie in place so that you don’t have difficulty while presentation.
So far the profession goes – “Don’t dress for the job you have; dress for the job you’d like to get.”
Emotions from actions
Formal dressings, in general, invoke a sense of responsibility and alertness owing to the social behavior associated with it. Suits, in particular, help build a sense of leadership by installing power in our personality. Nobody looks suits with weird eyes which boosts the self-esteem. If everybody respects you, a little, unconsciously, and automatically, because of your dressing, why would not you do it?
Casual clothing helps you relax, sometimes, make more mistakes because of less attention. Surely, it does help you to think creatively owing to the relaxed nature but does not play good in professional circles. And by now, you know why!
